About UN Bonn

The United Nations are currently represented in Bonn by 19 organizations (UN Bonn). UN Bonn supports targeted efforts by governments for a sustainable future in the fields of climate change, land degradation, biodiversity and ecosystem services, wildlife conservation, volunteerism, health, human security, disaster risk reduction, tourism, as well as education and training. This not only includes the sustainable use of natural resources and their precautionary preservation for future generations, but also the global fight against poverty.

The United Nations has had offices in Bonn since 1951. In 2006, the UN Campus was officially inaugurated by the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, with the "Langer Eugen" as the main building. The UN presence in Bonn has grown steadily, from a handful of staff in 1996 to what has become a UN family with an international staff of almost 1,000 colleagues.

Furthermore, the United Nations are represented in Germany with institutions and liaison offices in Dresden, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt and Nuremberg.

    The establishment of UN organizations in Bonn is no coincidence. The entirety of UN Bonn is tasked with working on solutions to resolve some of the greatest problems faced by humankind. The development of the UN Campus in Bonn in a NUTSHELL

1951Liaison Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR, since 1999 in Berlin)

1991Decision to move German Government and Parliament from Bonn to Berlin

1994Berlin/Bonn Act: Decision to position the Federal City of Bonn as Development hub for national, international and supranational entities. 1, 437 Billion EUR were invested between 1995-2004.

1996Handover of Haus Carstanjen to the then SG Boutros Boutros-Ghali); Arrival of United Nations Volunteers Programme, Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

2006Inauguration of the UN Campus Bonn (Langer Eugen) by then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, now home to 13 out of 14 UN Bonn agencies. Given the increase of staff, UNFCCC remains in Haus Carstanjen.

2013– July: the former Altes Abgeordnetenhochhaus (AHH) becomes part of UN Campus and is an extraterritorial area
– August: International Childcare Centre opened
– October: part of the Climate Change Secretariat moves into new premises in the AHH
