COP27 reaches last-minute agreement

After two days of extra time, the 27th Conference of Parties (COP27) has been able to agree on a final declaration. Part of it includes a breakthrough in the "Loss and Damage" funding for the countries most affected by the climate crisis. A fund was created into which wealthy nations are to pay in the future. In the unfortunate event of climate catastrophes, such as droughts, floods or a sharp rise in sea levels, vulnerable countries will have access to the fundings to mitigate the consequences.

COP27: UNFCCC expands Climate mechanism

Shortly before the end of the climate negotiations in Sharm El-Sheikh, the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced the continuation of their joint program to promote technology in the climate sector. The project period has been extended to the years 2023 to 2027.

Making Cities Resilient program continues to be successful

Under the ´Making Cities Resilient 2030´ program by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the Brazilian city of Campinas is transforming its urban landscape. In recent years, the city has been hit several times by storms and even flooding in 2003. In 2013, the city government finally established a resilience committee in collaboration with UNDRR. Now, by increasing local resilience, the city has managed to reduce neighborhoods located in the risk area of natural disasters by 64%.

UNCCD starts cooperation with DeserTech

At this year's UN Climate Change Conference COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, participants are addressing a wide range of aspects of the climate crisis. The Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is also on site to promote the fight against desertification. The main UNCCD project is the Great Green Wall, a band of trees that will stretch from the west coast of Africa across the Sahel to Ethiopia in the east of the continent. A total of eleven African countries are participating in the initiative.

Last week of COP27 begins

For the 27th time, the world's states and organizations are meeting to find a joint solution to the most challenging problem of our time: The climate crisis. This year's Conference of the Parties (COP27) has been underway in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh since November 6., which makes the city the first to host an UN climate conference on the African continent. These conferences are organized by the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Conference of Youth 17 in Egypt

Just days before the start of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference COP27, the 17th Conference of Youth (COY17) has begun in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, with a festive opening ceremony. The conference is organized by YOUNGO, the official youth representative constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). COY17 provides a platform for young people from around the world to contribute to solutions to the climate crisis that will affect their generation more than older generations.

UNFCCC releases new climate report

Just weeks, before COP27 - the next international climate conference – kicks off in Sharm ash-Shaykh, the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has published its newest report on the implementation of the Paris climate goals.

The goal of the UNFCCC is to support states worldwide in implementing strategies to combat climate change. In doing so, a key priority is to implement the 2015 Paris climate conference goal of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century compared to the pre-industrial era.
