Cross-border cooperation, digital health, and value-based health care were 3 of the topics that kicked off the first day of the 27th meeting of the Regions for Health Network (RHN) in Brussels, Belgium. During the meeting, regions and partners discussed local and regional governance for better health and well-being and how to future-proof resilient and connected health systems in a rapidly changing international context.

Youth4Health - Youth participation in Tirana

From October 25 to 27, the Albanian capital Tirana hosted 500 young people coming from 30 countries for the Youth4Health Forum of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Europe. The forum was held for the first time in this form and was organized in cooperation with the Albanian Ministries of Health and Social Affairs, and Youth and Children. Tirana, as the European Youth Capital 2022, was an ideal venue for the youth event.

Foods for Infants and Young Children: A Matter of Concern?

World Breastfeeding Week, held on 1–7 August each year, sparks discussions across the WHO European Region around the growing international concern about infant feeding. Many commercial food products are marketed as suitable for babies from 4 months of age, potentially displacing breast-milk intake. Worryingly, sweet purées and snack foods that are high in free sugars dominate the marketplace.

WHO recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed until the age of 6 months, followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary foods for up to 2 years, or longer.

UNAIDS Will Open a New Office at the UN Campus in Bonn in Mid-2022

The United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) will open an office at the UN Campus in Bonn in mid-2022. A delegation of UNAIDS and the Federal Ministry of Health visited the City of Bonn today.

"I very much welcome the establishment of the UNAIDS office in our city and thank the Federal Government for its support," said Mayor Katja Dörner. "With UNAIDS, the UN family in Bonn will be one institution larger and richer in new areas of responsibility. Together, we will work towards the vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths."

WHO: Two million confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the European Region

A grim milestone has passed as reported confirmed COVID-19 deaths from countries in the WHO European Region have exceeded 2 million people. While this number is devastating, it represents a fraction of the overall deaths directly and indirectly associated with COVID-19, as WHO’s report on excess mortality during the pandemic has shown.

While case numbers are declining in the Region, they remain far too high. COVID-19 continues to remind us that SARS-CoV-2 is still a killer virus, especially for the unvaccinated and clinically vulnerable.

World Hand Hygiene Day – unite to promote hand cleaning at the core of disease prevention

In our daily lives, we do so much with our hands. They are tools for creativity and for expressing ourselves, and a means for providing care and doing good. But hands can also be centres for germs and can easily spread infectious diseases to others – including vulnerable patients being treated in health facilities.
