UNCCD Desertification and Drought Day 2024: “United for Land: Our Legacy. Our Future”
This year’s Desertification and Drought Day, observed by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) on 17 June, will focus on the future of land stewardship. Every second, an equivalent of four football fields of healthy land becomes degraded – adding up to a total of 100 million hectares every year.
UN Bonn to participate in City of Bonn’s “Democracy Festival” on May 25, 2024
In May, the German Federal Government alongside the City of Bonn and other partners will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of the Basic Law and thus the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In Bonn, where the Basic Law was drafted and proclaimed on 23 May 1949, the Federal City of Bonn will be hosting a public celebration recognizing this important anniversary.

Researchers and students from Freie Universität Berlin went into dialogue with Ahunna Eziakonwa, Assistant Administrator and UNDP Regional Director for Africa, and Melanie Hauenstein, Director of the UNDP Representation Office in Germany, following a lecture by the UN Development Programme representatives on the topic "Africa: Continent of the Future".

Let's celebrate United Nations Day on 21 October!
Bonn has hosted a "United Nations Birthday Party" on a Saturday in October every year since 1996. The Charter of the United Nations was ratified on 24 October 1945. United Nations Day brings the work of the UN to the people. Traditionally, many institutions active in Bonn introduce themselves in a tent city, providing information on a common theme and inviting people to become involved. Since 2015, the United Nations Days have been dedicated to Sustainable Development Goals.

Today´s UN-Day!
The day commemorates the entry into force of the United Nations Charter through the ratification of the veto states of China, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Soviet Union, as well as other UN-members, on October 24, 1945. This gives as a reason to be celebrate the birth of the United Nations all around the world. Commemorative days, such as this one, give us the opportunity to focus our attention as a world public on the important work of the Organization.
Graduate students visit UNCCD to discuss the sustainable future of land
At the start of the new academic year, the United Nations Regional Information Centre in Bonn together with UNCCD, hosted a group of graduate students from Côte d’Ivoire, Germany and Kenya to discuss the Convention’s work on combating drought and desertification and the role of science in supporting good land stewardship.
