UN to monitor global disaster losses from Bonn

Yesterday the UN Secretary-General´s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, Mr. Robert Glasser, announced that next year will see the start of worldwide monitoring of disaster losses from extreme weather events and earthquakes trough the established UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) in Bonn. The office supports implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 which seeks “the substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives and livelihoods (…).”

During the conference Mr. Glasser said: “The accumulation of disasters over the last 12 months underlines how important this work is to understanding how we can prevent and mitigate disaster impacts and switch from disaster management to disaster risk management.”

David Stevens, Director of the UNISDR Office, also emphasized the connection between Disaster Risk Reduction and other Agreements such as the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement.
