Urbanization and incomes increase, diets are shifting. Meat consumption expected to rise from 37 kg/person p.a. 1999/2001 to 52 kg in 2050 (from 27 to 44 kg in developing countries), implying much of the additional crop production will be used as feed for livestock production.

One-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, which amounts to about 1.3 billion tons per year.
Food is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain, from initial agricultural production down to final household consumption.
The carbon footprint of food waste is 3.3 billion of tons of CO2.
Food losses represent a waste of resources used in production such as land, water, energy and inputs, increasing green gas emissions in vain.
